JULY 2024 NEWSLETTER – HOW DO HORMONES AFFECT SEXUAL DESIRE AND FUNCTION
At Hormonify, we see patients that are told that they have “Subclinical Hypothyroidism”(low thyroid) because of their symptoms. These symptoms include the following:
The practitioner usually gets lab work for thyroid function and it is normal. The patient is told that they do not need thyroid but some might help their symptoms. They never get evaluated for sex hormone and adrenal gland deficiencies, which is exactly the problem. All of the above symptoms are attributed to thyroid and are part of the list of symptoms we see with adrenal gland issues and lack of sex hormones, especially Progesterone. By the time they get to us, they have suffered sometimes for years for no other reason than the practitioners lack of knowledge and interest in helping the patient. Once the patient is properly diagnosed and treated all of these symptoms go away. I have called this syndrome “Pseudo-hypothyroidism”. This helps explain to the patient that it is not anything to do with the thyroid, however the practitioner does not know what to do. It is frustrating when we see this, however this occurs on a daily basis. For those with hyperthyroidism (hyperactive thyroid), the symptoms are not related to lack of sex hormones of adrenal function. Autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashiomoto’s disease) can result in low thyroid function and is properly treated with thyroid replacement. The persistent symptoms are related to the adrenal gland function and the balancing of sex hormones. Most of the time, the patient still suffers from symptoms even though they are adequately replaced with thyroid medications.
